The Rolling Hills Wetland Construction Project will take place on a Crown-Owned parcel at Twp Rd 532A and Rge Rd 271, immediately South-West of the Rolling Hills Subdivision in early November.
This project aims to restore three to four fully functioning wetlands on the site, totaling an area of approximately 1.25 ha. The restored wetlands will include both marsh and swamp habitat. The project would create habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, amphibians, deer, moose, bats, and pollinators; provide flood abatement; and improve the quality of surface water runoff.
The project would not flood homes, roads, or neighbouring land. The wetlands can be built at a low cost and would require little, if any, maintenance.
The primary objectives of this wetland restoration project include the following:
Establishing wetlands that allow water to spread out and slow down during periods of high flow
Improving the quality of surface water runoff
Creating shallow-water areas of variable depth, providing refuge for aquatic organisms
Improving habitat for a diversity of wildlife, including waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, amphibians, reptiles, bats, deer, and moose
Increasing habitat for pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and moths; and
Controlling non-native plants and restoring habitat for a diversity of native plants.
Construction
The construction phase will include:
Earthwork completed by heavy equipment;
Supply and installation of plant material;
Supply and installing wildlife features (e.g., woody debris, snags); and controlling erosion.
Equipment used for this project will include two excavators and two dozers.
Timelines
Construction has now been completed on the Rolling Meadows Wetland Restoration Project. The area has been seeded with native wetland plants and will be monitored by Parkland County Staff. The public is asked to keep off the area while plants are established.
