Project Completion - April 2026

The Building Product Site in Wabamun was used for industrial activities before the County acquired the property. The site remained vacant for several years and was assessed through multiple environmental investigations, which identified soil contamination. The shallow contamination primarily consisted of metals; however, assessments confirmed that it had not migrated off-site and posed a negligible risk to human health and the environment.
In March 2026, the dilapidated building and other on-site infrastructure were demolished and transported to a nearby waste facility. A total of 664 tonnes of impacted soil were also removed and disposed of at an approved facility. Following remediation, the affected areas were recontoured to match the surrounding landscape and maintain natural drainage patterns. No further investigations were recommended by the environmental consultant.
In May 2026, the entire site was hydroseeded to encourage rapid vegetation establishment, which has been successful. The remaining stockpiled concrete will be used in future County projects to help reduce costs.
A site-based Remediation Certificate application was submitted to the Province and is currently under review.
