What is the Wireless Internet Rebate Program (WIRP)

    • In response to ongoing demand for wireless internet services, the County is introducing the Wireless Internet Rebate Program (WIRP).
    • The WIRP subsidizes equipment and installation fees to remove barriers to service access for qualified residents.
    • Rebates of up to $1,000 are available to eligible residents.

Who is eligible for the program?

    • The program is open to all Parkland County residents who meet the following criteria:
      1. residents must supply proof of a series of CIRA speed tests demonstrating speeds consistently below 50 mbps download/10mbps upload, or
      2. declare an inability to establish a wired connection.

    When do applications open/close

    • Applications open on Monday December 2, 2024 and will close on or before February 28, 2025 subject to program demand.
    • Funding is currently available for approximately 100 eligible applicants. Should the funding be exhausted before February 28, 2025, the program will be reviewed.
    • The project team will continually monitor the program noting administrative demand, technical issues and opportunities for improvement.

    How do I apply?

Applications can be made online or by hard-copy application form.
    • Online:
      • Please visit this web page (https://yourparkland.ca/wirp) from Monday December 2, 2024 for full application details, including instructions for conducting your internet speed tests.
    • Hard copy:
      • Hard copy application forms may be obtained from Customer Service at Parkland County Centre from Monday December 2, 2024.

Which residents should take internet speed tests?

    • Parkland County is encouraging all residents to participate in CIRA speed tests, regardless of the quality of their current internet service.
    • The data provided will help improve understanding of connectivity and internet speeds more generally across the county, and help inform rural internet initiative planning.

I recently installed wireless internet at my own expense. Am I eligible to claim the rebate?

    • No. The rebate is available for new installations only, as the County requires participants to demonstrate a poor internet connection through a series of CIRA speed tests which cannot be provided retroactively.

Why is the County focusing on wireless rather than fibre optic connections?

    • The County continues to work actively with all levels of government on developing opportunities to bring more fiber into the county.
    • The CIRA data we are collecting from this program will inform the County’s fibre strategy, as will options we are pursuing with other levels of government.
    • We are running the WIRP to alleviate reduced internet service quality in the short term.
